Why Use a DSLR?

With today's smart phones providing a higher and higher quality of photos I can see why some question the continued use of DSLRs. 

Consider the photos above. The photo with all three of our dogs is especially sharp.  This is due to a combination of factors which includes using a large glass lens attached to the camera along with the 30 Megapixels the Canon 5D provides. The speed of the shot is also helpful especially with three border collies that don't like to sit still. 

While cameras do an awesome job of capturing photos and it's great to have a camera at all times, a DSLR gives flexibility that a camera phone doesn't offer. 

In the second photo we've zoomed in on Piper from the photo at the top, and we still have a similar quality as the original.

When we crop the photo again focusing on Piper’s eye we can actually see Brian's reflection. Even an the latest iPhone would not offer us this flexibility due to the use of a small plastic lens rather than a large glass lens on a DSLR. The resolution would not have been as high as the Canon 5D Mark III used in these photos.  
Also the speed at which the Canon camera can acquire the phone allows us to quickly grab a scene where our three pups sit still which didn't last very long. Thanks to Piper, Jet and Finn for sitting still for this article!
